  • QUOTES FROM A JULY 07 Caribbean Compass article-

  • “Product Review” by renowned CHRIS DOYLE, author of the

  • Sailors Cruising Guide.

  • “The WinchBuddy is basically a rechargeable winch handle.  The winch is reversible, which means with a simple flick of a switch you can go from high speed to lows speed on your winch.”

  •  “It zips up the MAIN in 30 seconds, at the end of which I feel completely fresh.”

  •  “This thing is a strong as an ox.

  • It hoist the dingy like a giant, cranks in sails better than a 300-pound gorilla, and takes much of the work out of short tacking.”

  •  “This product works as advertised, takes much of the “grunt” out of sailing, and it needs only the occasional infusion of juice: AN EXCELLENT ADDITION OF THE CREW!

  • Dear Winch Buddy!.........
We have an electric halyard winch on our Switch 51 foot Catamaran, but we also have 7 other winches which are not electrified.
The cost, weight and space of "electrifying" these other winches, well..........it was "Electrifying"!........
So, we tried WinchBuddy. We could mail it back within 30 days of receipt if we didn't like it. . ......My wife, who doesn't like to spend on" pricey boat units" was loath for me to buy it. Well, let's just say after the first time she used it to raise our daggerboards (a physical challenge, even with a large winch), she was sold. Another friend needed someone to winch him up his mast to retrieve a lost halyard. No problem,I just should up with my WinchBuddy and up he went, no effort at all. As we expect to go long distance sailing soon, Winch Buddy will be our third crew member all the way! We heartily endorse your product and recommend it to all. I even convinced a local boat broker to buy one and he takes it out on all his demo sails with all his customers. No effort winch grinding is the way to go!
    Regards and Thanks,
Scott and Cindy s/v "Beach House" Switch 51 Catamaran, Marina del Rey, CA

Winch Power-Ratio Formula

Usually the number of the winch size indicates its final gear power ratio. Most modern winches have two speeds, determined by choice of rotation.  One can multiply this number by the power input.
Winchbuddy’s maximum torque, approximately 80 lb/ft
.

Example:  A size 48 winch  X 80 lbs (power input) is equal to 3800lbs. of pulling power.

Weather Tip

The direction and rate of change of the barometric pressure is important. Foul weather is usually forecast by a falling barometer with winds from the east. Clearing and fair weather are forecast by a rising barometer with winds from the west.
